Investments in Our Environment Support Strong and Vibrant Communities

Corner Brook City Hall Receives LEED® Silver Certification

The Provincial Government, together with the City of Corner Brook, announced today that Corner Brook City Hall has been recognized as the first office building in the province to receive LEED® Silver Certification. A ceremony was held at City Hall in Corner Brook and attended by the Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East, Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West, and Charles Pender, Mayor of Corner Brook.

“This a great day for the City of Corner Brook and for Newfoundland and Labrador. The Provincial Government is committed to environmentally-sound infrastructure development. We would encourage all communities in this province to follow the lead of Corner Brook, and include sustainable and green features in their municipal projects.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

LEED®, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes and neighborhoods. Corner Brook City Hall includes a number of key elements which led to silver certification including the inclusion of a ground-source heat pump, locally-sourced building materials, high-efficiency lighting, water conservation systems and a green roof.

“The City of Corner Brook once again is proving itself a leader here on the west coast and indeed in the province with this recognition of LEED® Silver Certification. This shows a commitment by council to building sustainable infrastructure, which will contribute to a greener future in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East

Corner Brook City Hall which opened in 2011 is a 10,000 square metre facility which houses council chambers, office space for city staff along with the Corner Brook Museum and the public library. The Provincial Government contributed approximately $15 million toward the project, while the City of Corner Brook provided approximately $7 million.

“The protection of our environment is so very important, and it is great to see the efforts of city council paying off in this announcement today."
- Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West

This LEED® designation aligns with commitments made in Charting Our Course: the 2011 Climate Change Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining public services and reducing operating costs where possible.

“The City of Corner Brook is proud to stand as a leader in this field. When we undertook the challenge of building a new City Hall, we chose to set an example for others in our community and across the province. It is our hope that Corner Brook City Hall will be the first of many LEED® certified public buildings across our province.”
- Charles Pender, Mayor of Corner Brook

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
