Public Advisory: Adverse Weather Conditions Anticipated Throughout Newfoundland and Labrador

Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) encourages residents to be cautious around coastlines and waterways over the coming days.

Officials with Environment Canada are forecasting the current weather system affecting Newfoundland and Labrador will generate high winds with gusts potentially reaching 170 km per hour in the south west region of the Island. All other areas, including Labrador, may see wind gusts in excess of 100 km per hour. These winds will generate large wave and pounding surf conditions along the south coast of the Island and coastal regions of Labrador. Residents should be mindful of these conditions, and avoid coastal areas if at all possible. Conditions may be extremely hazardous and emergency management officials advise the public to use extreme caution.

Precipitation associated with this system will also affect the province today and into tomorrow, with the heaviest rains rain impacting the south coast of the Island and southern Labrador. An extended period of freezing rain is also forecast for central Labrador.

Residents are reminded to follow the latest weather forecast for further warnings and advisories and to take measures to ensure personal safety. More information can be found at weather.gc.ca/warnings/index_e.html?prov=nl .
