Responsible Investments to Strengthen Communities

Municipalities and Inuit Community Governments to Benefit from $22 Million in Municipal Operating Grants

The Provincial Government continues to provide support to communities through annual Municipal Operating Grants. Funding amounts have now been communicated to eligible municipalities and Inuit Community Governments and an update was provided on the program today at the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador 63rd Annual Convention.

“As announced during the last budget, the Provincial Government is pleased to be supporting eligible municipalities and Inuit Community Governments with a new grant formula for 2014 which will see $22 million provided to municipalities across the province. This new formula will see most communities getting an increase in funding and none seeing a decrease.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Municipal Operating Grants are provided to municipalities and Inuit Community Governments with populations of less than 11,000 residents. These grants support the day-to-day operations of these communities, and fund recreation, maintenance and other programs.

"As a mayor and as President of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, I am very encouraged to see the work which has been done to update the Municipal Operating Grant program so that it distributes funding to our smaller municipalities and Inuit Community Governments, who rely on it the most. For our seven largest municipalities, we were pleased that government committed an additional $25 million in capital works funding in Budget 2013 and we are looking forward to incremental capital works investments for them in the future.”
- Churence Rogers, President of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador and Mayor of Centreville-Wareham-Trinity

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
