Candidates Recognized for Making Their Mark in Municipal Election

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs, is congratulating newly elected councillors across the province following yesterday’s municipal elections. For the next four years, these new councils will work to enhance services and develop strong, sustainable communities for people and families throughout the province.

“Serving your community on council is one of the most significant ways in which you can contribute to the province, and improve the quality of life where you live,” said Minister O’Brien. “During this election we saw nearly 2,000 candidates offering themselves for consideration. Residents clearly recognize the important work of councils and want to make a difference in their communities. Our councils have a huge impact in areas such as the provision of water and wastewater services, recreational programs, and today I would like to thank everyone who demonstrated their vision in running for elected office.”

Elections were held in 107 communities across Newfoundland and Labrador, while 78 towns had councils which were acclaimed. By-elections will be held in a number of communities to fill remaining vacancies.

“Our next step will be to work with any communities which have vacancies following the election, to assist them in filling these seats through by-elections,” said Minister O’Brien. “As we have stated throughout this campaign, everyone can make a difference in their own community by stepping forward. As we move through the next four years, I encourage newly-elected councillors and all residents to Make Your Mark wherever you live in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Dates and other details related to upcoming by-elections will be provided in the coming weeks.
