Water and Sewer Upgraded Through $869,000 Investment in Terra Nova
The Towns of Eastport and Dover will undergo extensive water and sewer
upgrades through an $869,000 cost-shared investment. The announcement was
made today by the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs,
and Sandy Collins, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and
Community Services and MHA for Terra Nova.
“This investment of $869,000 will upgrade infrastructure in Eastport and
Dover, and will promote the continuation of reliable water and sewer
services for residents,” said Minister O’Brien. “The Provincial Government
will continue to prioritize this kind of infrastructure investment as we
work with municipalities to deliver quality services, particularly in rural
Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Funding for this project is cost-shared, with the Provincial Government
providing 90 per cent of the funding and Dover and Eastport covering the
remaining ten per cent.
“It is important that we invest in basic infrastructure areas such as water
and sewer and I am pleased that the Provincial Government is continuing to
do this each year,” said MHA Collins. “The upgrading of these systems will
deliver better services to residents in my district for many years.”
In the Town of Dover, $250,000 will complete upgrades to two sewage lift
stations in the community.
“This investment of $250,000 is a great start towards our work to upgrade
lift stations in the community,” said Tony Keats, Mayor of Dover. “We look
forward to continuing our partnership with the Provincial Government as we
work towards achieving our goals in the area of wastewater management in the
Town of Dover.”
In the Town of Eastport, a $619,000 investment will fund water and sewer
upgrades. This includes the installation of sections of watermain and
sewermain and construction of a lift station.
“I am pleased to see the Provincial Government investing in our town’s water
and sewer system,” said Genevieve Squire, Mayor of Eastport. “It is
important that we are able to provide a reliable water system for the
residents of Eastport as well as our many visitors.”
Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes funding for the second
year of a $130 million municipal capital works program. This investment is
funding important infrastructure projects for towns and cities, and is
delivering better services for families in areas such as water and waste
water, recreation, road repair, and fire services, across the province.
