$100,000 in Funding Announced for New Firefighting Unit in Greenspond

The Provincial Government is committed to delivering the best possible fire and emergency services to the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. As part of this commitment, $100,000 will be used to purchase a new rural response unit for the Town of Greenspond. The Honourable Kevin O'Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador made the announcement today in the community.

“It is with great pleasure that I announce an investment of $100,000 toward the purchase of a new rural response unit for the Town of Greenspond,” said Minister O’Brien. “The unit is a compact, self-contained firefighting apparatus that is well-suited for smaller communities in rural parts of the province. This unit will contribute greatly to the overall level of fire protection in the community, and is the second such unit our government has committed to purchasing this fiscal year. The truck will be delivered in the fall of next year.”

The unit will be cost-shared between the Provincial Government and the municipality through a 90/10 cost-share ratio. This new specification of fire truck was unveiled at the Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador Training School in Grand Falls-Windsor earlier in the year.

“This investment is a welcomed addition to the Town of Greenspond,” said Eli Cross, MHA for Bonavista North. “I know the community is grateful for this new firefighting vehicle and will ensure it is well maintained. Hopefully, it will never have to be used. However, it is comforting to know that when a fire occurs, the necessary equipment will be in place to respond. I also offer my sincere appreciation to Minister O’Brien who took the time to announce the truck in the community while expressing his support for the volunteer firefighters and others that operate the fire department and town.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future contained $1.5 million for the purchase of new fire trucks and emergency response vehicles and $380,000 for new fire equipment throughout the province.
