$785,000 in Funding Announced for Capital Works Projects for Ferryland Area

Recreation and road work projects will move forward throughout the Ferryland area through a cost shared investment of $785,000 between the Provincial Government and local communities. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and MHA for Ferryland.

“The funding being invested in the Ferryland area will bring many benefits to residents and enhance recreation, and transit services in these communities,” said Minister O’Brien. “The development of viable and sustainable communities is a key priority of the Provincial Government and this $785,000 investment will go a long way towards building stronger communities in the District of Ferryland.”

Funding for these projects is cost-shared, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the funding and the towns of Cape Broyle, Ferryland, Bay Bulls and Witless Bay each covering their ten per cent share.

“This investment in a variety of infrastructure projects in these communities is part of a continued commitment to the residents of the Ferryland area,” said Minister Hutchings. “The funds being invested are vital to the well-being of residents and will provide a better standard of living for the people of the Ferryland area for many years to come.”

In Cape Broyle, $70,000 is being invested to conduct a concept and engineering design for renovations to the community center.

“We are excited about this funding which will begin some design work for a new community facility,” said Donald Graham, Mayor of Cape Broyle. “We are hopeful that in the next few years we will be able to complete work on this important building for our community.”

In Ferryland, $55,000 is being invested to purchase equipment for a new playground for the community.

“Currently there is a lack of playground facilities in our community,” said Leo Moriarty, Mayor of Ferryland. “Thanks to this investment, we can build a new playground which will allow greater opportunities for healthy living and exercise for the children of this town.”

In Bay Bulls, $160,000 is being invested to realign Quays Road to provide greater separation between the road and gulch embankment.

“This road poses a danger to motorists and school children alike who share the roadway,” said Harold Mullowney, Mayor of Bay Bulls. “I am pleased to see the government investing money to alleviate these safety issues.”

In Witless Bay, $500,000 is being invested for reconstruction of Track Road to accommodate increased traffic from new residential sub-divisions.

“As there has been a substantial increase in traffic over time in this area it is important that we have adequate infrastructure to support this greater demand on our roadways,” said Dermot Moran, Mayor of Witless Bay. “These upgrades to Track Road will aid the town in its continued efforts to grow and provide good quality services to residents.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes funding for the second year of a $130 million municipal capital works program. This investment is funding important infrastructure projects for towns and cities, and is delivering better services for families in areas such as water and waste water, recreation, road repair, and fire services, across the province.
