$460,000 Announced in Funding for Water and Road Works for the Town of Wabana

The development of rural infrastructure is a key priority of the Provincial Government. As a result of this, $460,000 in funding is being committed for the paving of roads and continuation of work on the water supply system in the Town of Wabana. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs; the Honourable David Brazil, MHA for Conception Bay East - Bell Island; and Gary Gosine, Mayor of Wabana.

“This investment of over $400,000 will provide vital infrastructure to the residents of Wabana for reliable roads and for the supply of drinking water,” said Minister O’Brien. “This will help continue the sustainability and growth of the town and provide residents with adequate services which they need to maintain a good standard of living, and to strengthen a sense of community pride.”

This project will see the paving of five local gravel roads and the completion of the second phase of the water works initiative which includes the construction of waterlines from the new pumphouse to the water system.

“With the addition of these paved roads and continuation of this important water works project, the Town of Wabana will be a better place for all residents,” said MHA Brazil. “The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to providing the basic infrastructure needed for municipalities to thrive, including access to good, safe roads and clean drinking water.”

Funding for this project is cost-shared with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the funding and the Town of Wabana covering the remaining 10 per cent.

“Residents of Wabana are thrilled that the Provincial Government is moving forward with these projects,” said Mayor Gosine. “It is imperative that our residents have access to safe roads, and a reliable source of clean water.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes funding for the second year of a $130 million municipal capital works program. This investment is funding important infrastructure projects for towns and cities, and is delivering better services for families in areas such as water and waste water, recreation, road repair, and fire services, across the province.
