$425,000 Announced to Upgrade Fortune Water and Sewer System
Residents of the Town of Fortune will benefit from a $425,000 investment in
the water and sewer system in the community. The announcement was made
August 7 in the Town of Fortune by the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of
Municipal Affairs, together with the Honourable Darin King, Minister of
Justice and MHA for Grand Bank, and Charles Penwell, Mayor of Fortune.
“We have made tremendous investments to benefit families and communities in
Newfoundland and Labrador in recent years, and this project is another great
example of these investments,” said Minister O’Brien. “By upgrading aged
infrastructure, the Town of Fortune will have enhanced water and sewer
services which will directly benefit both residents and businesses.”
The project will see large sections of water and sewer piping being replaced
on both Lake Street and Elford Street in the community. Recently there have
been significant leaks in both areas and upgraded piping will allow the town
to correct the problem.
“This is a great day for the people of Fortune, and this announcement
demonstrates the commitment of government to infrastructure priorities
including wastewater” said Minister King. “I would also like to thank the
town council for their work on this project. This investment of $425,000
which is cost-shared between the province and the town, will alleviate a
number of recurring issues and will deliver better service to residents for
years to come.”
Funding for this project is cost-shared with the Provincial Government
providing 90 per cent and the Town of Fortune covering the remaining 10 per
cent.
“This project is an important one for the community, and I would like to
thank the Provincial Government for providing funding which will make it
possible,” said Mayor Penwell. “Water and sewer services are essential to
the community, and this project will upgrade our system and solve problems
we have been experiencing with leakage in recent years.”
Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes funding for the second
year of a $130 million municipal capital works program. This investment is
funding important infrastructure projects for towns and cities, and is
delivering better services for families in areas such as water and
wastewater, recreation, road repair, and fire services, across the province.
