$46,000 Announced for Community Centre Upgrade in Garnish
Community centres are important gathering places, particularly in rural
Newfoundland and Labrador. These facilities offer diverse programming and
meeting space, and are a focal point for the community. In recognition of
this $46,000 in funding is being committed to the Town of Garnish for
upgrades to the local community centre. The announcement was made on August
7 by the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs, the
Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and MHA for Grand Bank, and
Reuben Noseworthy, Mayor of Garnish.
“This facility is a hub of activity for the town and it is my pleasure to be
here today to announce $46,000 which will revitalize the community centre
for the people of Garnish,” said Minister O’Brien. “Having a place for the
entire community to come together to socialize and be active is important
for the health and well-being of all municipalities across the province.”
The project will include upgrades to the electrical service throughout the
building, painting, repair of the gym floor and the installation of new
lighting.
“I am sure that residents here in Garnish will benefit greatly from this
upgrade to the community centre,” said Minister King. “Having a facility
which meets the needs of residents is important for ensuring the prosperity
of the community, and allows families to lead more active lives and take
pride in their town.”
Funding for this project is cost-shared with the Provincial Government
providing 90 per cent and the Town of Garnish covering the remaining 10 per
cent.
“I am pleased that the Provincial Government is partnering with us to
provide this much needed funding for the community centre,” said Mayor
Noseworthy. “These repairs will ensure our residents have access to a
comfortable and safe facility. When completed, they will allow us to
continue to bring families and friends together through the community
centre, and will help foster new relationships in the town.”
Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes funding for the second
year of a $130 million municipal capital works program. This investment is
funding important infrastructure projects for towns and cities, and is
delivering better services for families in areas such as water and
wastewater, recreation, road repair, and fire services, across the province.
