$99,000 Announced to Enhance Fire Services in Stephenville Crossing
In an effort to enhance fire and emergency services for the area, the
Provincial Government along with the Town of Stephenville Crossing, will
invest $99,000 to upgrade lighting and install a new bay door for the town’s
fire hall. The announcement was made during a meeting with town and fire
services officials on July 29.
“This facility was built in the late 1960s and the time has come for
upgrades to be completed so that this facility can continue to provide fire
and emergency services to the residents of Stephenville Crossing,” said the
Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “This $99,000
demonstrates the commitment of the Provincial Government to upgrade
municipal infrastructure and to strengthen and grow rural communities.”
The volunteer fire department which uses the building serves residents
throughout the region, in the Town of Stephenville Crossing and the Local
Service Districts of Black Duck Siding, Mattis Point and Barachois Brook.
“It is great to see this much needed funding which will upgrade the fire
services building and benefit the people of Stephenville Crossing,” said the
Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills and MHA for
St. George’s - Stephenville East. “This modernized facility will bring
additional safety and security for the people of Stephenville Crossing and
the surrounding area for years to come.”
Funding for this project is cost-shared with the Provincial Government
providing 90 per cent and the Town of Stephenville Crossing covering the
remaining 10 per cent.
“The town fire hall is a focal point of the community, and we have a great
group of volunteers who provide fire and emergency services from that
facility,” said Leona Webb, Mayor of Stephenville Crossing. “This investment
by the Provincial Government and the town will ensure that we are able to
continue to provide our citizens with first-class fire services which will
make this community a safer place to live.”
Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes funding for the second
year of a $130 million municipal capital works program. This investment is
funding important infrastructure projects for towns and cities, and is
delivering better services for families in areas such as water and waste
water, recreation, road repair, and fire services, across the province.
