$380,000 Invested for Safer School Access in Glovertown
The Provincial Government is committed to continuous improvement of road
infrastructure across the province. As a result of this, $380,000 is being
invested for road upgrades and paving in the Town of Glovertown which will
bring additional safety in the area of Glovertown Academy. The announcement
was made at an event in the community on July 25 by the Honourable Kevin
O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs.
“Having adequate and properly maintained roadways is important for the
people of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister O’Brien. “Our young
people are the future of this province, and this investment of $380,000 will
allow safer access to Glovertown Academy, demonstrate the Provincial
Government’s commitment to the development of safer communities for all
residents.”
The funding will be used to complete pavement work on Penny’s Brook Road.
The road, which provides access to Glovertown Academy, will be widened to
allow access for both vehicular and foot traffic. A dedicated walking area
on the edge of the pavement will bring additional safety for students who
use the road to walk to the school.
“I am pleased to see the Provincial Government investing in this area, and I
applaud the commitment being made to the safety of students in Glovertown,”
said Sandy Collins, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Community
Services and MHA for Terra Nova. “This project will allow drivers to more
easily and safely share the roadway with students who are walking to and
from Glovertown Academy by providing pedestrians with a dedicated walking
area.”
Funding for this project is cost-shared with the Provincial Government
providing 90 per cent and the Town of Glovertown covering the remaining ten
per cent.
“The funding being provided by the Provincial Government, along with our
municipal investment, will be of great benefit to the people of Glovertown,
particularly our students,” said David Saunders Sr., Mayor of Glovertown.
“Not only will pedestrians be safer while walking to school, but we will
also have a better, wider roadway which will benefit all residents of the
community.”
Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes funding for the second
year of a $130 million municipal capital works program. This investment is
funding important infrastructure projects for towns and cities, and is
delivering better services for families in areas such as water and waste
water, recreation, road repair, and fire services, across the province.
