$380,000 Invested in Recreation and Wastewater Projects in the Town of St. George's
The Provincial Government is supporting the ongoing development of key
services in the Town of St. George’s through investments totalling $380,000
for renovations to the Siki Bennett Memorial Stadium and upgrades to a sewer
lift-station. These projects are cost-shared between the Provincial
Government and the town. An event announcing funding for these projects took
place on Sunday, July 28.
“This announcement highlights the Provincial Government’s commitment to
building strong communities and supporting the development of services for
residents and families,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of
Municipal Affairs. “As part of this commitment, the Town of St. George’s and
the Provincial Government are investing $230,000 in the installation of an
artificial ice surface at the Siki Bennett Memorial Stadium. In addition,
$150,000 is being invested to upgrade a sewer lift station.”
The Siki Bennett Memorial Stadium is an important recreational facility in
the Town of St. George’s. This investment of $230,000 will allow the town to
upgrade the facility through the installation of an artificial ice surface.
In addition, $150,000 has been allocated for the upgrading of Tobin’s Lift
Station. This is the last of seven lift stations which serve the town to be
upgraded, with the remainder being upgraded in recent years.
“It is a pleasure to work with the Mayor and council in the Town of St.
Georges,” said the Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and
Skills and MHA for St. George’s - Stephenville East. “This council provides
great support to residents, as is evident in these two important projects
being announced today.”
Funding for these projects is cost-shared with the Provincial Government
providing 90 per cent and the Town of St. George’s covering the remaining
ten per cent.
“Our community is receiving a tremendous boost with this announcement,” said
Fintan Alexander, Mayor of St. George’s. “As the Town of St. George’s
continues to grow and develop we are seeing a strong sense of pride in our
community, and these investments will allow us to provide improved waste
water and recreation services to the residents of the town.”
Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes funding for the second
year of a $130 million municipal capital works program. This investment is
funding important infrastructure projects for towns and cities, and is
delivering better services for families in areas such as water and waste
water, recreation, road repair, and fire services, across the province.
