New Water Treatment Plant Improves Water Quality in Marystown

The people of Marystown will have access to clean and safe drinking water thanks to a new water treatment plant, representing a total investment of $13.6 million. The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs, today along with the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education and MHA for Burin-Placentia West, and Sam Synard, Mayor of the Town of Marystown, officially opened the new water treatment plant on Fox Road.

“Drinking water infrastructure is a major investment for communities throughout our province, and we work with these communities to build and upgrade systems on a continuous basis,” said Minister O’Brien. “This new facility will become an integral part of the water supply system in Marystown, and will ensure that clean drinking water is available to the community for many years to come.”

Through the Municipal Capital Works program, the Department of Municipal Affairs places a high priority on water projects. As a result, the Provincial Government has made a significant investment in water treatment, water distribution, and water-related studies in recent years. In addition, the Department of Environment and Conservation and the Department of Municipal Affairs work together to provide training and certification for municipalities across the province.

“The investment being highlighted here today is so important to the people of Marystown,” said Minister Jackman. “As the community continues to grow and flourish, a modern water system is critical, and this new infrastructure demonstrates the commitment of the Provincial Government to the provision of clean drinking water.”

Since 2008, the Provincial Government has committed over $50 million for 72 water treatment projects in Newfoundland and Labrador. The total commitment to these projects including investments by municipalities and the Federal Government is over $114 million.

“This is a great day for the people of Marystown,” said Mayor Synard. “This facility represents a sizable investment, which will ensure that when our residents turn on their taps, they have safe and clean drinking water. I am confident that we now have a system in place which will meet the needs of our community long into the future.”

Minister O’Brien also outlined key investments in Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future including ongoing funding for the second year of a $130 million capital works program. This investment will continue to fund important infrastructure projects for towns and communities across the province.
