Public Advisory: Safety Encouraged During Anticipated Storm Surge Conditions

Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) is advising residents to prepare for storm surge conditions and to be cautious around coastlines and waterways throughout the long weekend.

Officials with Environment Canada forecast a low pressure system from the northeast resulting in higher than normal water levels tonight (Thursday, March 28) into tomorrow (Friday, March 29). Officials note that regions with a northeastern exposure along the Northern Peninsula, specifically near St. Lunaire-Griquet and along the east coast from Fogo Island to St. John’s can expect large waves, pounding surf and higher than normal water levels to develop this evening during high tide. Wave heights near nine metres are expected, particularly in areas from Fogo Island to Cape Freels. These conditions will continue into Friday.

It is anticipated these storm surge conditions will coincide with high tide and could produce high water levels. High tide will occur at approximately 9:00 p.m. this evening and 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. This weather system could result in coastal infrastructure damage and residents are encouraged to take proactive measures in areas that have experienced problems with high water levels in the past.

FES-NL encourages residents to be mindful of these conditions throughout the coming days, be prepared, and avoid coastal areas if at all possible. Conditions may be extremely hazardous and emergency management officials advise the public to use extreme caution. There also exists the possibility of winter storm conditions and visibility may be impacted, which officials warn could pose significant risk for people who journey close to coastal areas.
