Town of Labrador City Soccer Facility to be Upgraded with Federal and Provincial Government Investments

The Town of Labrador City will expand the Labrador West Minor Soccer Association building thanks in part to investments from the Governments of Canada and of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The announcement of funding was made today by Peter Penashue, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, President of the Queen’s Privy Council and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of Bernard Valcourt, Associate Minister of National Defence and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie); and the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Our government is making investments in community recreation infrastructure because we know it will help create jobs and long-term growth and because we know that safe and quality facilities are vital to community health and well-being,” said Minister Penashue. “Soccer has been popular in Lab West for many years and with the growth in the area’s mining activity, the increasing population puts additional demand on the recreational facilities. This investment will help the Lab West Minor Soccer Association meet those demands.”

The Government of Canada investment of approximately $70,620 in the project is through the Community Improvement Infrastructure Fund (CIIF). The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is investing $43,486 through the Department of Municipal Affairs.

”We are pleased to be able to join the Federal Government, the town and the local soccer association in contributing funding to this worthwhile community project,” said Minister O’Brien. “The upgraded facility will offer greater opportunities for physical activity and participation in organized sports which will benefit both youth and adults in Labrador West for years to come. It is great to see that as this region of the province continues to grow and develop, we can continue to support recreation for long-time residents and newcomers alike.”

The Town of Labrador City and the Labrador West Soccer Association are together investing $34,865 in the project, while private sector cash and in-kind donations total $63,000.

“Council is pleased to partner with the Labrador West Minor Soccer Association and our federal, provincial and community partners, in the development of an expanded clubhouse and field maintenance storage facility,” said Town of Labrador City Mayor Karen Oldford. “The Labrador West Minor Soccer Association is a strong, dedicated volunteer organization with the largest registration of any youth organization in Labrador West. This commitment to recreational programming has become one of the region's recreational hallmarks, providing quality service to local residents and an attraction for new families.”

The Government of Canada’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund is an initiative of the Economic Action Plan 2012.
