Strategic Investments Made in Municipal Infrastructure

Numerous municipal infrastructure projects began to roll out in 2012 as a result of the Provincial Government’s continued commitment to the Municipal Capital Works and Multi-Year Capital Works programs. Strategic investments in 570 projects were announced for many communities throughout the province representing a provincial contribution of approximately $530 million.

“The Department of Municipal Affairs has a strong relationship with municipalities across our province,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects. This funding clearly demonstrates the commitment of this government to the development of community infrastructure around the province.”

Projects undertaken in 2012 are resulting in marked improvements in municipal infrastructure. Priority is given to water and sewer projects, but there are many other important projects also taking place. Announcements were made for new civic buildings, new municipal depots, improved recreation facilities and road work in a number of areas along with important upgrades to water and waste water systems.

“We have made significant progress in addressing infrastructure demands in the province over the last several years,” said Minister O’Brien. “I look forward to continuing to work with municipalities on important projects as we move into the 2013 season.”

Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $625 million in municipal capital works with $174 million dedicated to multi-year projects. This investment has resulted in modernized infrastructure across the province and has improved services for residents to support the long-term sustainability, growth and development of communities.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
