Ministers Express Condolences on Passing of Former Supreme Court Justice

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice, and the Honourable Tom Marshall, Q.C., Attorney General, expressed their condolences today to the family and friends of retired Supreme Court Justice Kevin Barry, who passed away on October 18.

“Justice Barry served the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador admirably throughout his career in various legal capacities,” said Minister King. “For 20 years he was a fixture in central Newfoundland, after being first appointed to the District Court in Gander 1976 and ultimately retiring as a Justice with the Supreme Court, Trial Division, in that town. His impact on the legal community in the province was substantial.”

Justice Barry was also active outside the legal profession. He was a former Mayor of the Town of Curling and also chaired the province’s Labour Relations Board for a period.

“Prior to being appointed to the bench, Justice Barry was a pillar of the legal community on the west coast of the province and he was highly respected,” said Minister Marshall. “I was fortunate to work with him and ultimately become his law partner in Corner Brook. He had a significant impact on my career as well as the careers of many other legal professionals in Newfoundland and Labrador. He will be deeply missed.”
