Tender Awarded for Construction of Second Jury Room at Supreme Court in St. John’s

The tender for the construction of a new jury room at Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador in St. John’s has been awarded to Eastern Contracting Ltd. The contract for the project is worth approximately $230,000 and will see facilities renovated to include a new conference room, washrooms and other infrastructure made available to jurors.

“Having a second jury room in St. John’s will significantly increase the capacity for jury trials in the province,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice. “Ensuring that those charged with crimes have timely access to the court system in Newfoundland and Labrador is important. The Provincial Government remains committed to a strong justice system in Newfoundland and Labrador that provides for fair and secure access to all residents.”

It is anticipated that the new jury room will be completed by January 2014.

This is just the latest upgrade to court facilities in St. John’s. The past several years have seen a new perimeter screening system installed at Provincial Court; the installation of an elevator and the construction of a wheelchair accessible ramp at the Court of Appeal; and the addition of a wheelchair accessible washroom at the Trial Division of the Supreme Court.
