Newfoundland and Labrador’s Ocean’s Technology Sector Promoted at OCEANS ’13

The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, is travelling to San Diego today to attend the OCEANS ’13 MTS/IEEE conference, one of the world’s most diverse and prestigious ocean technology focused conferences. Minister Hutchings will deliver several presentations that will promote the province’s expanding ocean technology sector, Arctic exploration potential, as well as to invite delegates to next year’s OCEANS’14 MTS/IEEE, conference, which will be held September 14-19, 2014, in St. John’s.

“The Provincial Government stands firmly behind our ocean technology sector,” said Minister Hutchings. “With ingenuity, experience and determination, we have transformed the challenges of working with and from the sea into opportunities and competitive advantages.”

Taking place September 23 to 26 in San Diego, California, OCEANS ’13 MTS/IEEE is a major forum for scientists, engineers and business leaders to gather and exchange their knowledge and ideas regarding the future of the world’s oceans. With an audience representing 46 countries, this year’s conference is the largest to date with over 2,000 delegates anticipated to attend. Themed An Ocean in Common, OCEANS ’13 MTS/IEEE is jointly sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Oceanic Engineering Society, as well as the Marine Technology Society.

“Collaboration between industry, academia and government is key to the success of the province’s ocean technology sector and participation in conferences like OCEANS ’13 MTS/IEEE fuel those important partnerships,” said Minister Hutchings. “I look forward to welcoming over 1,200 delegates next year and showcasing our beautiful province while demonstrating first-hand the calibre of work, research, and ocean technology capacity within Newfoundland and Labrador.”
