Home-Grown Theatre Company Supported with $69,000 Investment
To support Theatre Newfoundland Labrador and their efforts to promote heritage inspired theatrical productions throughout the province, the Provincial Government will provide funding of $69,000 to the Corner Brook based theatre company.
“Theatre Newfoundland Labrador offers a unique and valuable experience to both their audiences and their colleagues,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development. ”I am pleased that the $69,000 in funding will assist this well-regarded theatre company in moving forward with their development and assist them in completing the second phase of their new facility development plan, as well as provide for additional marketing and production initiatives throughout the coming year.”
Theatre Newfoundland Labrador is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating and producing professional theatre which reflects the lives and diversity of their audiences on Newfoundland’s west coast, extending to Labrador, as well as throughout the remainder of the Island.
“Theatre Newfoundland Labrador is very proud of the work we do and the benefit our work has on our communities”, said Gaylene Buckle, General Manager. “We’re indeed fortunate to play a part in keeping our province’s history and culture alive through the plays we create and produce and provide valuable work to professional Newfoundland and Labrador artists – from playwrights to actors to designers. The fantastic fallout of creating great theatre is the positive economic spinoff for our communities, our region and our province. We could not do what we do without the belief and support of our provincial government.”
Through the Gros Morne Theatre Festival, youth theatre programming, courses in theatre instruction, and by touring productions to rural communities, Theatre Newfoundland Labrador seeks to provide Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with thought-provoking and relevant entertainment, with an emphasis on regional and Canadian work. “As a government, our role is to create an environment where organizations like Theatre Newfoundland Labrador can take advantage of new opportunities and grow as a consequence,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “As a result, not only does the province’s cultural heritage sector grow stronger, but the economy also benefits and diversifies when industry and talent are supported.”
