Investment of $147,000 Supports Second Phase of Glovertown Marina Project
The community of Glovertown has further added to an important piece of
economic development infrastructure as the result of a $147,000 investment
from the Provincial Government. Undertaken by the Glovertown Marina
Development Corporation, phase two of the development project has led to the
construction of 20 new berths, a permanent hydraulic lift, the construction
of a hydraulic lift basin, as well as renovations to existing buildings.
The announcement was made by Sandy Collins, Parliamentary Secretary and MHA
for Terra Nova, on behalf the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of
Innovation, Business and Rural Development, at the official opening of the
Glovertown Marina today.
“Glovertown is well-known as a destination for recreational boaters,” said
Minister Hutchings. “As a result of this $147,000 investment and with this
expanded infrastructure, there are now even more opportunities to
accommodate and attract an increased volume of boaters and tourists to the
area. With the marina already seeing an increase in traffic, this project
further highlights the effectiveness of community and government
partnerships in advancing economic activity in rural Newfoundland and
Labrador.”
In 2010, the Provincial Government invested $191,000 in phase one of the
marina project, resulting in the completion of 30 new berths. The total
investment in both phases of the project has now led to 50 complete berths
and spin-off benefits for the community’s business and construction sector.
In addition, the Provincial Government investment has enabled the marina to
dredge the harbour, build concrete walls, floating docks and add a boat
launch.
“This is an extremely positive development for the people of Glovertown and
the surrounding communities,” said Mr. Collins. “This government is
committed to the growth and sustainability of rural Newfoundland and
Labrador and projects such as this hold significant potential as a key
tourism attraction and economic generator for the region.”
With a large harbour opening that extends more than 25 kilometres into
Alexander Bay and Pitt Sound Reach, Glovertown is a strategic location for
boating enthusiasts. Its sheltered harbour attracts visitors from across
Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada who are seeking sailing, power
boating and water skiing experiences.
