Business Receives $250,000 for Pressure-Treated Wood Facility

To support a newly-developed pressure-treated wood facility to improve efficiencies and business operations, the Provincial Government has provided $250,000 to Goodfellow Inc., a wholesaler and distributor of wood and wood by-products. The announcement was made today in Deer Lake by the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.

“Funding of $250,000 supported the establishment of a pressure-treatment facility adjacent to the company’s existing distribution yard in Deer Lake which treats local wood using modern technology and complies with the latest environmental standards,” said Minister Hutchings. “The new facility is operational and reduces turnaround time required to produce and distribute product, which significantly decreases the company’s operating costs, adding to their competitive edge.”

Goodfellow Inc. sources raw wood from various Newfoundland mills, supporting the forestry industry.

“Goodfellow Inc. provides Newfoundlanders with the opportunity to purchase pressure-treated products produced by a local plant,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. “The company will utilize locally-produced lumber, opening a reliable and consistent market for our sawmills, which is consistent with this department’s strategy to utilize more wood locally and further grow the economy by providing additional employment opportunities.”

Goodfellow Inc., has been operating in the province for over 30 years, and has facilities throughout Canada, including Deer Lake and St. John’s. Goodfellow Inc. offers a wide inventory of exterior siding, flooring, plywood, treated wood and prefabricated products.

“Our investment in this initiative of over $1 million dollars is a sign of our confidence in the strong Newfoundland economy,” said Dave Warren, Vice President at Goodfellow Inc. (Atlantic Canada). “We can now treat Newfoundland-produced lumber at our Deer Lake facility, enabling Goodfellow to produce value added product on the Island. Our decision to build this facility in Deer Lake was ideal due to its proximity to the Newfoundland wood supply.”

Funding was made available through the Business Attraction Fund, which supports large-scale, strategic investments in business ventures and infrastructure for the purpose of attracting business to Newfoundland and Labrador.
