Federal and Provincial Governments Support Tourism Development on the Bonavista Peninsula

The Trinity Historical Society (THS) will develop several historic sites in the area to build on visitor experiences and increase the regional tourism impact, thanks to support from the Governments of Canada and of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The announcement was made today by the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, along with the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development (IBRD).

“Our government’s top priority is creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity, which is being achieved through investments in strategic sectors,” said Minister Shea. “The Bonavista Peninsula offers an enriching unique cultural tourism experience and opportunity to commemorate a significant moment in our history, which will be further enhanced by these investments which will help build on the economic benefits that result from a growing and vibrant tourism industry.”

The Provincial Government’s investment of $91,000, along with the Federal Government’s funding of close to $73,000 provided through ACOA, will enable the Trinity Historical Society to develop and enhance visitor experiences at several interpretive historic sites, including Fort Point and Gun Hill, as well as explore new partnerships with the private sector. Fort Point upgrades will include technologically advanced programming to add audio and GPS tours, as well as an educational virtual exhibit on its military history. This will complement the new interpretative living history piece being performed by Rising Tide Theatre. THS will also work with other historical sites to pilot educational and specialized programming and to enhance visitor services.

“The Provincial Government is committed to diversifying the economy and encouraging and supporting long-term sustainable employment opportunities for the people of the province,” said Minister Hutchings. “Our investment in historical sites on the Bonavista Peninsula enhances the attractions available in the region. This will greatly enrich the experience of the thousands of people who visit the area each year, leading to extended tourist stays, a stronger local industry and spinoff benefits.”

Canadian Heritage’s assistance of $75,000 supports work at the Gun Hill site, in addition to other initiatives to celebrate Trinity’s military history. Investment from the 1812 Commemoration Fund will help develop a commemorative area in Trinity where a signal station at Fort Nicholas once stood. Educational materials and a commemorative event will also help Canadians learn more about Trinity’s connection to the War of 1812. This will provide an opportunity for more than 35,000 citizens in the Atlantic region – and potentially thousands more from across the country – to participate in the 200th anniversary of the war.

“Through this multi-faceted initiative, we are continuing to develop the types of quality programs, exhibits and services that tourists expect to experience in an area like Trinity. This is a key way for us to meet a market demand and grow our tourism industry while bringing our history and culture to life,” said Ian White, President of the Trinity Historical Society.
