Destination Trail Network Receives Government Support
The Town of Trinity, along with five other Bonavista Peninsula municipalities and partners, received a boost from the federal and provincial governments to develop a destination trail network to enhance tourism attractions in the region.
The announcement was made today by the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development (IBRD).
“Our government’s top priority is creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity,” said Minister Shea. “We are pleased to support initiatives that advance the tourism industry, which help develop a strong, competitive Atlantic Canadian economy. Through the strategic enhancement of tourism infrastructure in the region, the Bonavista Peninsula will continue to develop as one of the province’s tourism destinations of choice.”
“The Provincial Government has a mandate to diversify the economy on a provincial and regional basis and to support private sector business growth,” said Minister Hutchings. “Our investment in the destination trail network enhances the attractions available on the Bonavista Peninsula. This will broaden experiences for visitors and encourage more tourists to come to the region, resulting in a stronger local tourism industry and a positive impact on local businesses.”
An investment of more than $199,000, equally split between ACOA and IBRD, will enable the Town of Trinity and its partners to build on the successful model used by the internationally-acclaimed Skerwink Trail to develop a network of six trails in the region. The trail network, which will enable visitors to experience the Bonavista Peninsula’s natural rugged beauty and shorelines, will complement existing tourism operations and incorporate key attractions and points of interest. In addition to Port Rexton’s Skerwink Trail, the project will enhance Cape Bonavista Trail (Bonavista), Gun Hill Trail (Trinity), King’s Cove Lighthouse Trail (King’s Cove), Klondike Trail (Elliston) and Murphy’s Cove/Lodge Pond Trail (Trinity Bay North).
“Our region continues to work with community, private sector and government partners to develop tourism infrastructure that will appeal to visitors and build on what we have already established,” said Jim Miller, Mayor of Trinity. “We know that visitors are drawn to our scenery, culture and hiking trails and through this initiative, we are working towards establishing a well-maintained destination trail network that will generate benefits for the entire region.”
