Fall Sitting of the House of Assembly Enhances Well-being of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians

The fall sitting of the House of Assembly came to a close yesterday as the Honourable Frank Fagan, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, gave royal assent to 19 bills which passed through the legislature this session. Twenty bills in total passed during the fall session, with the Supplementary Supply Act, 2013-14 receiving royal assent on November 14.

Over the past six weeks, members of the House of Assembly debated wide-ranging legislation which included topics such as public safety, child protection, violence in schools, and Human Rights.

“The life of every Newfoundlander and Labradorian has been touched in some way by the work completed throughout this session of the House of Assembly. Through principle-based governance and responsible decision-making, we have enhanced the protection of our children through amendments to both the Adoptions Act and the Schools Act. We have also made great strides in providing equal human rights for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with the Human Rights Act, which fittingly passed yesterday on International Human Rights Day.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Government House Leader

The House of Assembly closed with glad tidings as the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and leaders of both opposition parties wished all honourable members a happy and healthy holiday season.
