Public Accounts Committee
The Public Accounts Committee is responsible to oversee the Public Expenditures in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
While not restricted to a review and examination of the Auditor General’s report, the committee does review the Auditor General reports, then writes to identified government departments and agencies. After reviewing the responses of those entities the committee requests the attendance of Representative of those entities to publicly answer questions.
Actual correspondence, research and scheduling of hearings are ordinarily done by a staff researcher. In a time of financial restraint, the person who has been responsible for this task has been laid off.
However, the committee has been assured that another dedicated person will be assigned to this role. While the committee regrets the loss of the current person, there is no reason to believe that the committee’s work will suffer under the new staffing arrangement.
Given that the Public Accounts Committee examines public expenditures, it is incumbent on the committee to operate in an efficient and effective manner. If the committee finds itself under-resourced, it will request additional resources.
