Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Best Shot Against the Flu

The seasonal influenza vaccination is now available throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Combined with regular hand washing, the flu shot provides the best protection against the influenza virus.

“Although good nutrition and exercise contribute to your overall health and well-being, these alone will not protect you from the influenza virus,” said Dr. Faith Stratton, Chief Medical Officer of Health for Newfoundland and Labrador. “The influenza vaccine is safe and the most effective way to prevent the spread of influenza and to reduce complications caused by the virus.”

The influenza vaccine is recommended, and provided free of charge, for individuals at high risk for complications from influenza, including:

It is recommended that people receive the seasonal influenza vaccination before flu season begins. The season usually runs from December to April. This year’s flu shot protects against three types of influenza, including two types of influenza A, and one influenza B.

“Influenza is easily spread by air-borne particles from coughs and sneezes and from touching surfaces contaminated with the virus,” said Dr. Stratton. “Practicing the simple rule of Clean, Cover and Contain is recommended to help prevent the spread of influenza. Remember to thoroughly wash your hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and to stay home when sick.”

Information on specific flu shot clinics is available from public health offices, family physicians, and the regional health authority office in your area.
