Health Care on the Southwest Coast Elevated by Investment of Over $770,000
The communities of Port aux Basques, Burgeo and Ramea will benefit from
$771,300 in new equipment, repairs and renovations to improve
infrastructure, enhance care and increase patient safety.
“The availability of health care impacts every resident of Newfoundland and
Labrador,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and
Community Services. “Communities along our southwest coast are serviced by
health centres in Port aux Basques, Burgeo and Ramea. Investing over
$770,000 in this region will help ensure that our physicians, nurses and
health care workers have modern equipment and improved facilities to treat
and care for patients, families and all residents of our communities.”
The Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre in Port aux Basques will receive
$663,000 for renovations to the facility. This funding will be used for
ongoing mechanical system upgrades, replacement of exterior doors and
flooring, renovations to the nursing station on the long-term care unit and
enhancements to building access and security. Also included in the funding
will be renovations to physician/staff housing in the community.

provision of health care in the southwest coast of our region,” said Dr.
Susan Gillam, CEO, Western Health. “These investments assist us in ensuring
access to quality health care services for the people of this area.”
In Burgeo, the Calder Health Centre will benefit from $90,300 for new
equipment including stretchers, a fetal monitoring unit, ceiling lift,
patient beds and upgrades to building access and security. In addition, the
Ramea Medical Clinic will receive $14,000 for a new powered ambulance cot to
enhance patient and staff safety during patient transfers.
Budget 2013 includes a total investment of $226 million in capital
infrastructure, which includes $165.8 million for continuing construction
and redevelopment; $40.2 million for new equipment; and, $20 million for
repairs and renovations. Since 2004, the Provincial Government has provided
nearly $6.3 million for repairs, renovations and equipment in the
communities of Port aux Basques and Burgeo.
