Enhanced Care Pilot Project Announced in Meadows

A new initiative to advance the 10-year long-term care strategy Close to Home, was announced today by the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services, at Mountain View House in Meadows. Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future, allocates $1.5 million for the implementation of an Enhanced Care in Personal Care Homes Pilot Project which will allow personal care homes to provide care to residents that require a higher level of care.

“Our government recognizes that personal care homes are integral to providing appropriate living arrangements for seniors,” said Minister Sullivan. “Through a $1.5 million investment, this pilot project will give us the opportunity to evaluate the potential for personal care homes to expand their role in the provision of seniors’ care. It creates the opportunity for seniors to live in a personal care when they require enhanced care.”

In response to a request for proposals, Callingwood Downs Seniors Complex in Clarke’s Beach, Golden Years Estates in Gander, and Mountain View House were selected to participate in the pilot project. Each home will be permitted to admit eight clients who require increased levels of care during an 18-month period.

“This pilot project is an innovative way to utilize existing expertise and supports in the province,” said Minister Sullivan. “Seniors are a critical element of our communities and regions and with investments exceeding $550 million, our government has placed significant emphasis on advancing initiatives of long-term care and community services that support their needs. This new initiative will build on that commitment and complement existing programs and services.”

The Enhanced Care in Personal Care Homes Pilot Project supports the Provincial Government’s approach to further developing a strong and effective health care system. The project will have an evaluation component that will examine the feasibility, appropriateness and resident outcomes in terms of safety, quality, and overall suitability.
