Commitment to Health Care on the Northern Peninsula Remains Strong

Families on the Northern Peninsula will continue to have timely access to quality health care services through a Provincial Government investment of over $2.3 million in Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services, announced the funding today in St. Anthony for the purchase of new equipment and infrastructure repairs and renovations.

“Under the leadership of Premier Dunderdale, we are ensuring individuals in all regions have access to high-quality treatments and new technologies that enhance the delivery of health care,” said Minister Sullivan. “Today’s investments build on the many initiatives that we have advanced in this region over the last several years, and ensure that essential health care services are readily available when needed by individuals and families living in this area.”

The Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital will receive approximately $1.5 million for the replacement of health care equipment, including eight dialysis machines, an EEG machine, video conferencing equipment for Telehealth and diagnostic imaging equipment. This also includes $628,000 for upgrades to the building envelope and elevator, as well as the air handling unit.

Today’s announcement also includes almost $800,000 for the White Bay Central Health Centre in Roddickton and the Strait of Belle Isle Health Centre in Flower’s Cove. Funding is allocated for the replacement of equipment such as new urinalysis systems, coagulation analyzers and backups, microscopy and laboratory equipment, as well as the installation of a central air conditioning system at the White Bay Central Health Centre.

“Labrador-Grenfell Health welcomes the health care facility improvements that will take place in St. Anthony, Roddickton and Flower’s Cove,” said Tony Wakeham, CEO, Labrador-Grenfell Health. “Funding under the capital program will be used to replace a wide range of equipment which is essential in the delivery of quality health care services to residents of northern Newfoundland and southern Labrador.”

The Provincial Government has invested approximately $28.5 million in capital equipment and repairs and renovations at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital, White Bay Central Health Centre and Strait of Belle Isle Health Centre since 2004.
