Minister Proclaims Mental Health Week
During Mental Health Week, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are encouraged to examine their own mental health and how it affects all aspects of their lives. To help bring awareness to mental health, the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services, was recently joined by mental health groups and advocates to sign a proclamation recognizing May 6 to May 12 as Mental Health Week.
“Providing mental health services and programs has been a priority for the Provincial Government,” said Minister Sullivan. “Mental health is more than the absence of mental illness. It is a state of being where an individual can realize his or her own potential. Our government continues to invest in the mental health of its residents through both early intervention and community work as well as through clinical services.”
The theme of the Canadian Mental Health Associations’ 62nd annual Mental Health Week is Mental Health for All. This year, the week focuses on youth, including high school and university students, as well as parents and caregivers who play a crucial role in the lives of youth.
“Statistics show that up to 70 per cent of young adults who are experiencing a mental health issue had symptoms begin in childhood,” said Minister Sullivan. “Having good mental health is important for daily living, building relationships and coping with stress. If a person is experiencing poor mental health, they are encouraged to talk to a loved one or a professional to help address any issues they may have.”
At least one in three Canadians will experience problems with their mental health each year. Individuals experiencing a mental health issue can contact the Canadian Mental Health Association – Newfoundland and Labrador Division at 1-877-753-8550 or call the 24-hour Mental Health Crisis Line at 1-888-737-4668 for information and help.
Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future continues to provide funding for mental health and addictions groups as well as $19.6 million for the development of three treatment centres and for the planning of the Waterford Hospital replacement.
