Budget 2013 Investment Highlights Commitment to Families and Seniors in Lewisporte

A Budget 2013 investment of $4.3 million to complete the Lewisporte Health Centre was announced today by the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services, at the official opening of the new North Haven Manor. The investment continues to highlight the Provincial Government’s approach to advancing initiatives that benefit families and communities.

“Strengthening long-term care and community support services is a key focus for this government,” said Minister Sullivan. “Our investment of $25 million in North Haven Manor and our Budget 2013 commitment to complete the Lewisporte Health Centre are quality investments that will benefit families and seniors in this area for years to come.”

Minister Sullivan was joined by Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte, and Rosemarie Goodyear, Interim President and CEO, Central Health, at the announcement.

“These investments reflect this government’s commitment to enhance health care services,” said Mr. Verge. “Citizens of North Haven Manor, for example, are able to maintain daily living activities in a homelike environment, while receiving the quality care and support they need. Likewise, residents will have access to x-ray and laboratory services at the Lewisporte Health Centre.”

North Haven Manor includes a 12-room protective community residence for those with mild to moderate dementia. It also has 51 rooms for long-term care residents, including one designated for palliative care, and three with double occupancy capacity to provide the opportunity for residents, such as couples, to live together.

“This community residence gives people an opportunity to enjoy a certain level of independence,” said Ms. Goodyear. “The services provided at North Haven Manor, an important component of the Lewisporte Health Centre, support our strategic goal of healthy aging and ensure that services are delivered in an age-friendly environment.”

The Provincial Government has invested over $550 million in new funding for long-term care and community support services over the last eight years. Budget 2013: A Sound Plan. A Secure Future builds on this significant investment by allocating almost $73 million for the continuation of long-term care infrastructure projects.
