Incredible Learning Adventure Made Possible Through Provincial Government Support
Bailey Tarrant, a 14-year-old Grade Nine student from Holy Name of Mary
Academy in Lawn, was recently awarded a $10,000 Students on Ice Scholarship
through the Marine Institute’s Ocean Net program. The scholarship, which was
funded by the Provincial Government, will enable Ms. Tarrant to learn about
environmental sustainability while exploring arctic environments on a
research vessel staffed with world-class educators.
“Ms. Tarrant will be a tremendous ambassador for Newfoundland and Labrador
as she joins other Canadian students on the Students on Ice Arctic Youth
Expedition this July,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of
Fisheries and Aquaculture. “The essay she wrote to win this scholarship
shows the extraordinary intelligence of our province’s youth, and this
scholarship is one way the Provincial Government is encouraging talented
young people to consider futures in ocean science.”
Ms. Tarrant’s essay A Little Does A Lot: Cleaning the Trash Vortex,
explored ocean pollution and ways to address it.
“Ms. Tarrant has brought tremendous pride to her school and her community
with this achievement,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice
and MHA for the District of Grand Bank. “I commend her environmental
advocacy, and I wish her all the best as she embarks on this
once-in-a-lifetime educational experience.”
This marks the first year that the Marine Institute’s Ocean Net program has
awarded a Students on Ice Scholarship. Ocean Net initiates, guides, and
supports the engagement of youth and community volunteers in all aspects of
the marine environment.
“I want to thank the Provincial Government and the Marine Institute for
making this incredible experience possible,” said Ms. Tarrant. “I plan to
use this learning experience to further my understanding of the environment
and the impacts of our actions on the world, and to sharing what I learn
with others.”
The Provincial Government makes Students on Ice scholarships available to
youth through a number of departments and organizations each year. The
Provincial Government also funds the Dr. Wilfred Templeman Memorial
Scholarship for graduate students; the Fisheries and Aquaculture
Scholarship; and student placements at the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems
Research at the Marine Institute.
