Responsible Decisions and Sound Fiscal Management
22,000 Public Employees Finalize Collective Agreements in 2013
Through effective negotiations and responsible decisions, the Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador reached successful collective agreements with four
public sector unions this year, ensuring benefits for more than 22,000
public employees. The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and
Private Employees (NAPE), the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the
Association of Allied Health Professionals (AAHP) and the Royal Newfoundland
Constabulary Association (RNCA) all reached agreements with the Provincial
Government in 2013.
“This year was a successful one for collective bargaining in our public
service, and I am proud that this government recognized the contributions of
individuals in the public sector, and met the varying needs of our workforce
through these collective agreements. At the same time, our government
continues to ensure sound fiscal management in providing agreements that are
sustainable over the long term.”
- The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury
Board
Agreements with NAPE, CUPE, and AAHP include benefits such as a five per
cent general economic increase over the term of the agreement, and a signing
bonus of $1,400 in year two of the agreement, while the RNCA agreement
included a new maternity-parental leave benefit which will see income top-up
for new parents.
Through sound fiscal management and responsible decisions, the Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening the business environment,
encouraging the development of innovative industries and building a vibrant
economy.
