Minister Responds to Auditor General’s Update Report

In response to the release of the Auditor General’s update report, the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, noted that the Provincial Government has made significant progress in implementing recommendations of the Auditor General and will continue efforts to build upon government’s rate of compliance. The update report provides an overview of the implementation of recommendations contained in previous reports of the Auditor General.

“Our government has made significant progress since 2007 in implementing the recommendations of the Auditor General which has resulted in increased effectiveness of programs and services,” said Minister Kennedy. “When consideration has been given to recommendations that have been fully or partially implemented, the Provincial Government has made progress on 90 per cent of the recommendations contained in the Auditor General reports issued for 2007 to 2010.”

The Auditor General’s update report this year focuses on the status of 608 recommendations made over the four-year period from 2007 to 2010. This year the Auditor General has outlined recommendation targets as follows:
2010: Target of 80 per cent for recommendations fully and partially implemented;
2008 and 2009: Target of 80 per cent for recommendations fully implemented;
2007: Target of 90 per cent for recommendations fully implemented

The Provincial Government met the targets in 2007 and surpassed the 2010 target, achieving 84 per cent. For 2008 and 2009, the compliance rate was 76 per cent. Approximately 550 of the 608 recommendations contained in the Auditor General reports issued for 2007 to 2010 have been fully or partially implemented by the Provincial Government.

“Our government carefully considers all recommendations and comments of the Auditor General,” said Minister Kennedy. “It is important we not overlook that many recommendations have been partially implemented and, where possible, departments will continue to work on full implementation. We continue to strive to improve our implementation rate and welcome any recommendations that result in improvements in service delivery for the residents of our province.”
