Supporting a Vision for the Safety and Well-being of Women, Families and Communities

Ovations 2013 Applauds Women Leaders

Efforts by the Provincial Government to advance women in leadership were enhanced this past year with the exceptionally successful launch of the first ever celebration event of women’s leadership in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ovations: Applauding the Accomplishments of Women in Our Communities.

“Ovations provided an opportunity to bring together women from various backgrounds to recognize and celebrate their accomplishments. Women shape the history and culture of this province and are instrumental to its growth and development.”
- Honourable Joan Shea, Acting Minister Responsible for the Status of Women

Ovations consisted of a forum Celebrating Women: The Premier’s Forum on Leadership, which involved a panel of women leaders who shared their knowledge, experiences, challenges and successes. The second component of the event was an evening gala to celebrate women’s accomplishments in the past, present and future.

Ovations supports women in leadership through outreach and professional development while highlighting the importance of diversity and helping to address challenges faced by women. In 2014, further professional development opportunities will be available to women across the province such as regular Lunch and Learn programs. The Ovations event is just one of many initiatives the Provincial Government supports to ensure the advancement of women leadership.

The Provincial Government continues its overall support for women with funding for the Women’s Centres, the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, Regional Coordinating Communities against Violence, the Violence Prevention Initiative, promoting women in trades and by many other organizations and programs that promote the status of women.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
