Investing in Recreation for Communities and Families

$1.8 Million Allocated for New Mount Pearl Gymnastics Facility

The Provincial Government, with the City of Mount Pearl and Campia Gymnastics, is contributing toward a $1.8 million investment for the construction of a new gymnastics facility in the community. The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, joined community leaders, families and local athletes to celebrate the announcement today in Mount Pearl.

“As a government, we have a strong record of supporting the development of world-class recreational facilities throughout our province. These types of investments enhance the vibrancy of our communities and help improve the health and wellness of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. This new facility will support the training of hundreds of athletes year-round and will provide opportunities for Mount Pearl to play host to regional and provincial events.”
- The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The new facility is being funded through $1 million cost-shared, with the Provincial Government providing 70 per cent and the City of Mount Pearl covering 30 per cent. Campia Gymnastics is providing the remaining funds.

“We continue to both build and upgrade municipal infrastructure around the province in areas such as recreation, water and wastewater. In fact, since 2008 we have invested $650 million in infrastructure projects across the province.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Construction on the new facility is expected to get underway in the next year, and should be completed by 2015.

“This is a great day for the City of Mount Pearl and our athletes, and I thank the Provincial Government for providing funding and community volunteers for their work to date which is making this project a reality.”
- Randy Simms, Mayor of Mount Pearl

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
