Government Continues Support for Youth Organizations

Thirty-two organizations supporting youth engagement activities and learning opportunities for young people across Newfoundland and Labrador will receive approximately $640,000 in funding from the Provincial Government. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, announced the recipients of Grants for Youth Organizations today at the offices of the Girl Guides of Canada - Newfoundland and Labrador in St. John’s.

“The youth of Newfoundland and Labrador have opportunities today never experienced in our history, and helping our young people develop to their full potential is why we continue our ongoing commitment to youth organizations,” said Minister Hutchings. “Various organizations will receive funding totalling $640,000 to ensure thousands of young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are exposed to a variety of positive learning opportunities and experiences. Grants will assist groups who focus on youth engagement and provide quality programs and projects which provide leadership, mentoring, and educational initiatives which directly benefit our young people.”

Funding was made available through the 2013 Grants to Youth Organizations program, administered by the Office of Public Engagement. Grants will support organizations which support youth in self-reliance, leadership and citizen development, provide funding for a specific service or event, and/or support the development and delivery of new or existing organizational programs.

“Through these partnership initiatives, supported by the Office of Public Engagement, we are investing in organizations and programs that advance youth leadership, awareness of opportunity and development of important life skills for youth in all regions of the province,” said Minister Hutchings. “We are proud to work with these dedicated organizations which are encouraging youth to be actively involved with their communities and helping to develop our greatest resource, our young people.”

With a grant of $36,600 to support programming costs and events, the Girl Guides of Newfoundland and Labrador was one of the 36 organizations receiving funding today.

“For over 90 years guiding has allowed girls in this province to be confident, resourceful, courageous, and to make a difference in the world,” said Donna Tuck, Membership, Marketing and Public Affairs Adviser with the provincial guiding council. “The Girl Guides of Newfoundland and Labrador appreciates the assistance of the Provincial Government as funding allows us to continue to assist members in programs, international travel, camps, membership and promotion.”
