Premier Dunderdale Ensures Search and Rescue Concerns are Discussed at Premiers Meeting
Recognizing the importance of a reliable search and rescue system to all
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier
of Newfoundland and Labrador, raised this critical topic with her fellow
Premiers at the 2013 Council of the Federation Summer Meeting in
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
“The Federal Government has a very real and clear responsibility when it
comes to protecting our residents with a reliable and responsive air and
marine search and rescue system,” said Premier Dunderdale. “This is an issue
that my government has been raising consistently with the Federal Government
and today I have the consensus and support of all Canadian Premiers that it
is time for the Federal Government to take immediate action.”
Premier Dunderdale added search and rescue to the meeting agenda as part of
the discussion on emergency preparedness and response.
“We are calling on the Federal Government to restore the Marine Rescue Sub
Centres, to commit to improving search and rescue response times and to
conduct a thorough review of marine safety,” said Premier Dunderdale. “It
was important to ensure this conversation took place today, not just for
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who make their living on the sea, but for
each and every Canadian.”
