Ministers Congratulate First Female Chair of the Mining Association of Canada
The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Natural Resources, and the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, today congratulated Zoë Yujnovich, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) on her appointment as Chair of the Mining Association of Canada. This marks the first time a female has ever been appointed to the position of Chair in the organization’s 78-year history.
“Ms. Yujnovich has an extensive career in the mining industry and I am confident that her experience will serve her well in her new capacity as Chair of the Mining Association of Canada,” said Minister Marshall. “I extend sincere congratulations to Ms. Yujnovich and look forward to a continued working relationship with IOC.”
IOC is the province’s largest private sector employer in western Labrador with approximately 2,000 employees. The company produces 22 million tonnes of iron concentrate annually. IOC’s Concentrate Expansion Program is a three-phase plan designed to increase annual production to 26 million tonnes.
“This is an amazing accomplishment and a wonderful designation for Ms. Yujnovich,” said Minister Johnson. “The Mining Association of Canada has acknowledged her intelligence, dedication, and strong leadership skills on a national stage, which is truly inspiring for women, particularly young women.”
The Mining Association of Canada is the national organization for the country’s mining industry. Ms. Yujnovich has been a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Commitee since 2010 in the role of First Vice-Chair. The two-year appointment is effective immediately.
