Premier Offers Condolences on Passing of Dorothy Inglis

The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, expressed her sorrow today over the passing of Dorothy Inglis.

“On behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, I extend deepest sympathies and condolences to Dorothy’s family, friends and colleagues,” said Premier Dunderdale. “Her contributions to the status of women in this province and country were tremendous, in her roles as community activist, writer and feminist. Her memory and her legacy will never be forgotten.”

Feminist, writer and community activist Dorothy Inglis was a founding member and Vice-President of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women and a well-known spokesperson for women's equality.

Ms. Inglis authored Bread and Roses, the feminist column in the St. John's Evening Telegram, and was also a member of the Women’s Mentoring Program Advisory Committee that guided the development of A Woman’s Manual on Organizing an Election Campaign.

Ms. Inglis has been honoured for her work on several occasions.

She was a recipient of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women’s Robertine Barry Award for her writing on feminist issues, and received the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador literary award for non-fiction for her book containing a collection of her newspaper columns titled Bread and Roses.

Ms. Inglis received the Governor General’s Persons Medal for improving the status of women in Canada in 1989, and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of her work from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1998.
