Recreation Opportunities Expanded Through Development of New Paradise Arena
The Provincial Government reiterated its commitment today to the growth of
sustainable communities and the development of modern recreational
facilities during the ground breaking ceremony for a new double ice surface
arena in the Town of Paradise. The facility represents a total investment of
$22 million, and will be built by EllisDon.
“Our government continues to demonstrate that we know what is important to
families, individuals and communities throughout the province. This new
recreational facility in Paradise is just one more example of our commitment
to making strategic, responsible investments in our towns and communities in
order to provide effective programs and services to Newfoundlanders and
Labradorians,” said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland
and Labrador. “This facility will be a tremendous asset to the Town of
Paradise and the Avalon region for years to come. It will provide residents
and families in the area with much-needed additional space for recreation
programs such as skating, hockey and other activities.”
The new facility will feature two NHL-sized ice surfaces. One rink will
include fixed and retractable seating for 1,100 spectators while the other
will include fixed seating for 310. This will allow the arena complex to
host a variety of ice and other sporting events as well as tradeshows and
other meetings.
“I am pleased to be able to attend this important ceremony today which will
mean so much for the Town of Paradise,” said the Honourable Paul Davis,
Minister of Transportation and Works and MHA for Topsail. “This new facility
will bring greater access to sports programs for the community and region,
and will allow the town to host tradeshows as well as youth and seniors
organizations and business events which were not possible in the past.”
As part of the design process for the new arena, the design builder will be
incorporating energy efficiency concepts under the Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design or LEED program. LEED is intended to provide building
owners and operators a framework for the identification and implementation
of practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations
and maintenance solutions.
“This is a great day for the people of Paradise, as well as many of our
recreational clubs and organizations,” said Ralph Wiseman, Mayor of
Paradise. “We are so pleased about our partnership with the Provincial
Government towards the development of this new double ice surface arena
which will be a home to many local and regional sports activities long into
the future.”
Funding for the new facility was provided under Budget 2011 Standing Strong:
For Prosperity. For Our Future. The project is expected to be completed by
September 2014.
