Premier Discusses the Importance of Gender-Based Analysis with Atlantic
Colleagues
The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, led a
discussion on the importance of gender-based analysis in government
decision-making, during the 22nd session of the Council of Atlantic Premiers
held in White Point, Nova Scotia.
“I was glad to have the opportunity to lead a discussion on gender-based
analysis with my Atlantic colleagues. A fair and balanced approach is
important in all we do and through gender-based analysis we achieve equity
rather than equal treatment,” said Premier Dunderdale. “I hope that this
discussion will further advance the effective use of gender-based analysis
in decision-making within our respective governments in order to help
improve the social and economic status of women throughout Atlantic Canada.”
Thanks to the leadership of Premier Dunderdale, gender-based analysis has
had some notable impacts on advancing the status of women in Newfoundland
and Labrador. For example, the approval of major project developments in the
province now require the proponent to submit a women's employment plan as a
contractual requirement or as a condition of release under the provincial
environmental assessment process.
“We are proud of the steps we have taken to help women enter these lucrative
areas of the labour market in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Premier
Dunderdale. “These types of measures, which reduce the barriers that exist
for women entering the workforce, are critical to creating a healthier, more
balanced and prosperous society.”
