Premier Dunderdale Will Discuss Secure Energy at the Atlantic Premiers’ Meeting

The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will join fellow Atlantic Premiers Darrell Dexter, David Alward, and Robert Ghiz at the 22nd session of the Council of Atlantic Premiers on Monday, April 29, in White Point, Nova Scotia.

Along with discussing key areas for collaboration such as the labour market, job training and the regional economy, Premier Dunderdale will address the National Energy Strategy with her Atlantic colleagues, building on discussions which took place last week at the Council of the Federation Canadian Energy Strategy meeting in Toronto.

“A fundamental principle of our energy strategy will be security and stability throughout the country. Whether transporting oil and gas around the country, or transmitting electricity, it is critical that all Canadians have access to a reliable, secure and stable energy source,” said Premier Dunderdale. “With good planning, and strong leadership, we will position our jurisdiction to ensure our energy resources meet the needs of our people and the energy demands of the global market and drive economic development and diversification. I look forward to discussions and collaboration on this matter with my colleagues during this session of the Council of Atlantic Premiers.”

Through the Council of Atlantic Premiers, provinces have been able to work collaboratively to produce innovative results for the benefit of all, including signing an MOU to ensure timely access to cardiac bypass graft surgery; signing seat purchase agreements for each other’s law, medical and veterinary schools; and, collaborating on trade missions to help businesses enter foreign markets.

“We continue to see this collaborative and innovative approach benefit our province tremendously, especially when it comes to our development of Muskrat Falls,” said Premier Dunderdale. “Through our significant resource development projects, such as Muskrat Falls as well as Hebron, Newfoundland and Labrador has 70,000 skilled labour jobs on the horizon. Our goal is promote effective apprenticeship programs and services which will allow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to take advantage of the enormous opportunities at their doorstep. I look forward to discussing ways to continue to deliver results with my Atlantic counterparts that will respond to our growing labour market.”
