Premier Dunderdale Recognizes International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is an annual celebration that highlights the progress of equality for women. At an event hosted by the Women in Resource Development Corporation earlier today (Friday, March 8), the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, recognized the significance of International Women’s Day for women all over the world.

“International Women’s Day is a time for us to celebrate the progress women have made towards equity and social justice and to acknowledge that many challenges still lie ahead,” said Premier Dunderdale. “Following the tremendous success of Ovations, which brought women together in a celebration of accomplishments, we must continue to inspire, motivate and uplift one another for the work yet to be done.”

In 1977, the United Nations called on its member countries to proclaim a day recognizing women’s rights and Canada selected March 8 as International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum.

“Our government has made advancing the status of women and girls a top priority and will continue to work diligently with stakeholders to support women in our province,” said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. “The programs and initiatives we offer address key issues that affect women by promoting their safety and well-being, and by providing opportunities for personal growth, professional development, empowerment and equality.”

Women throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are recognizing International Women’s Day by coming together to celebrate the progress of women and reflect on the work still to be done. Events are taking place in communities including Nain, Port aux Basques, Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador City and St. John’s to mark the occasion.

Moving forward, the Provincial Government will continue to advocate for women’s rights by removing systemic barriers for women through programs such as the Women’s Policy Office, women’s centres, the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, as well as through the work of the Human Rights Commission.
