Minister Highlights Privacy Protection on Data Privacy Day

On Data Privacy Day, the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, is reminding citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador of the importance of protecting their personal information.

“It is important for people to be engaged when it comes to their personal information,” said Minister Hutchings. “With today’s technology, people are sharing more and more information about themselves and others – through social media, online shopping and even simply surfing the internet. It is important that people are aware of how to protect their personal information and the information of others entrusted to them. By taking a few simple steps, individuals can ensure that their privacy and personal information is protected.”

For example, officials of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy office advise that individuals should take the time to ensure software is up to date, and passwords are strong. In addition, it is important to review privacy settings on social networking sites so that personal information is limited from public accessibility.

“Prevention is the key when it comes to protecting personal information,” said Minister Hutchings. “I encourage all citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador to keep this in mind, not only today but throughout the year.”
