Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE APPOINTED:

Big Triangle Pond Mineral Exploration Access Road                          (Reg. 1725)
Proponent: Eagleridge International Limited

On November 15, 2013, the Minister advised the proponent that an Environmental Preview Report (EPR) is required for this project. An Environmental Assessment Committee has now been appointed to provide scientific and technical advice to the minister and to prepare guidelines for the preparation of the EPR. The Assessment Committee has representation from the following provincial Government agencies:

Department of Environment and Conservation

Department of Transportation and Works
Department of Natural Resources

UNDERTAKING WITHDRAWN:

Moosehead Lake (Labrador West) Rock Quarry                                 (Reg. 1723)
Proponent: H&H Enterprises Ltd.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Gallants Gravel Quarry
Proponent: Hubert Parsons                                                           (Reg. 1724)

The project is released subject to the following condition:

Due to potential slope instability in the area of the proposed undertaking, appropriate geotechnical or engineering assessment and a rehabilitation plan, are required to be submitted to this department for review and approval prior to commencement of any activities associated with the undertaking including any quarrying and slope remediation.

FINAL EIS GUIDELINES APPROVED:

Joyce Lake Direct Shipping Iron Ore Project
Proponent: Labec Century Iron Ore                                                 (Reg. 1674)

The Minister has approved the final guidelines for the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Joyce Lake Direct Shipping Iron Ore Project. The EIS guidelines document identifies the information that the proponent, Labec Century Iron Ore, will be required to address in order to prepare the EIS.
