Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Buchan’s Highway Hay Farm                                 (Reg. 1733)
Proponent: Martin Roberts

The proponent proposes to develop approximately 37 hectares of land for hay production on the Buchan’s Highway, approximately two kilometres southwest of the Town of Badger. The development of hay fields will require the removal of all vegetation including stumps and stones, leveling and planting of seeds for hay. Once the hay has reached maturity it will be harvested on a bi-monthly basis. The proposed development would provide quality hay for purchase. Land clearing is proposed to begin in the spring of 2014 and continue over a two-year period.

The undertaking was registered on November 8, 2013; the deadline for public comment is December 13, 2013; and the minister’s decision is due by December 23, 2013.

Drilling Mud, Cuttings Treatment & Enhanced Bioremediation Project
Proponent: Newfoundland Soiltec Inc.                                     (Reg. 1732)

The proponent has submitted a proposal to treat non-hazardous offshore drilling muds and cuttings at an industrial park facility located off the Trans Canada Highway near Paddy’s Pond, St. John’s. Facilities will consist of a soil washing unit that will require the construction of a new treatment pad, the installation of high powered agitation mobile drilling mud stabilization equipment and ongoing enhanced bioremediation of hydrocarbon impacted soils. The proponent anticipates that the facility will be operational by the spring of 2014.

The undertaking was registered on November 6, 2013; the deadline for public comment is December 13, 2013; and the minister’s decision is due by December 21, 2013.

UNDERTAKING WITHDRAWN:

Peters Pond (Bryan Borland) Quarry                             (Reg. 1642)
