Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT GUIDELINES:

Wabush 3 Open Pit Mine Project in Labrador West                                     (Reg. 1711)
Proponent: Iron Ore Company of Canada

The proposed Wabush 3 Open Pit Mine Project in Labrador is undergoing a provincial environmental assessment and an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is required. The Environmental Assessment Committee has prepared draft EIS guidelines that identify the information that must be included in the EIS. The public and Aboriginal organizations are invited to review these guidelines and provide written comments by November 12, 2013. Comments received will be reviewed and considered before the EIS guidelines are finalized and issued to the proponent.

EIS and AMENDMENTS ACCEPTED:

Kami Iron Ore Project                                                         (Reg. 1611)
Proponent: Alderon Iron Ore Corp.

A review has been completed of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) submitted October 1, 2012 and the amendments submitted February 15, 2013 and June 27, 2013. These documents comply with Part X of the Environmental Protection Act (the Act) and the EIS Guidelines dated July 5, 2012 and require no further work. The Minister will now be recommending to the Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council whether or not this -project can proceed as per Section 67 of the Act, subject to terms and conditions.
